HOW I STARTED SINGING?

Me leading worship in a service

For as long as I can remember I always sang. I was in the kids church choir as a dancer first. I always danced at home with my friends and sometimes we would improvise drums using water Jerry cans, cups and plates and spoons as the drum sticks. I rember I would go to church every Saturday for practice and dance with other children and have a whole lot of fun.

I went to boarding school and danced there too with time I became a choir leader for our school choir and I had to lead songs and fortunately it came naturally because I danced and I could follow the beat. Soon I would mimic our music teacher, how she sang and I pretty much sounded like a girl when singing because at the time my voice hadn’t broken.

I can say that with time I learnt how to harmonize and arrange songs in a way. I wrote my first song before I went to boarding school that was in class three. The title of the song I don’t quite remember but the message was to keep the fire burning for God.

I joined highschool after attending many music festivals in primary school not singing but reciting solo verses and choral verses. Which helped me in my mastery of words and from then I could right my own song better, choose the right words and not sound like a small boy. In highschool I joined the school choir. In primary school I was used to being the star in school imagine the culture shock. I realized that there were people who could actually dance better than me, but I had one advantage, my voice had not fully broken so sounding like a girl was a plus and my vocal range was quite good if not incredible. After knowing a few people I joined the music club and drama club. That year I recorded my first song called “Come as you are” which was a gospel song. I would later on join the Christian Union where I lead people in praise and worship songs and Perfected my craft even after my voice broke I realized I could sing even deeper notes which was another advantage. I learnt more about music at home after a mentor of mine Dr. Pst.James Kirimi created a group for youths to sing in church. For youths to sing in our church was unheard of but he made it possible and by God’s grace we did. So that’s where I started training to play drums and keyboard which really added to my musicality. I learnt to sing better. I learnt to corrdinate live instruments with the choir. I learnt to sing even more professionally. And I later recorded my first song after joining campus. The song is “Unanitosha” by Solosong Mawi Official on YouTube. That’s my brief singing story.
